How We Test VPNs

We test and review VPN services throughout the year to help users choose a solution that matches their needs, usage habits, and budget. Our goal is simple: provide clear, independent, and practical evaluations based on real-world use.

Our testing process combines hands-on testing, technical analysis, and careful review of each provider’s policies. We focus on how VPNs actually perform in everyday situations, not just on marketing claims.

Our Testing Approach

Every VPN is evaluated using the same methodology to ensure fair comparisons. We assess performance, usability, security, and privacy across common use cases such as streaming, browsing, remote work, and public Wi-Fi access.

While individual needs may vary, our reviews are designed to highlight real strengths and limitations so users can make informed decisions.

Privacy and Transparency

Privacy is a core requirement for any VPN, but not all services offer the same level of protection. Since we do not have direct access to provider infrastructure, our analysis is based on publicly available information and independent verification.

We review:

  • logging policies and data collection practices

  • clarity and transparency of privacy policies

  • past incidents and how providers responded

  • availability of anonymous sign-up and payment options

Clear policies and regular independent audits significantly increase trust.

Security Standards

Security evaluation focuses on the technologies used to protect user traffic and data.

We examine:

  • supported VPN protocols (OpenVPN, WireGuard, IKEv2)

  • encryption standards

  • additional security features such as leak protection and kill switches

Proprietary protocols are noted but treated cautiously when technical details are not publicly available.

Speed and Performance Testing

Speed tests are conducted over multiple days at fixed times to account for network fluctuations. We measure download speed, upload speed, and latency using high-capacity test servers located in North America and overseas regions.

Tests are performed with and without an active VPN connection to assess real performance impact across nearby and distant servers.
